Winter Olympics 2018: Curling confusion as Team GB curler is penalised in loss to Sweden

The Sochi bronze medallists were level at 6-6 with their opponents going into an extra end at the Gangneung Curling Centre. But they suffered defeat in astonishing circumstances as Eve Muirhead was penalised for releasing the stone too early. This meant the stone was removed from play, preventing Team GB from setting up a difficult shot for Sweden. Sweden were then able to play their final stone and claim an 8-6 victory.

After a clear set of laps at the Gangneung Ice Arena, Christie tangled with China’s Li Jinyu on the final turn of the last lap. The 19-year-old, who was born in the United States but has a British father, has taken bronze in the women’s ski slopestyle. Atkin scored 84.60 on a strong final run to win the first British Winter Olympic medal on skis. A Swiss team spokesperson said one of athletes was Fabian Boesch but not want to name the other as the athlete’s relatives had not yet been informed.
