‘Black Lightning’ electrifies discussion on superhero diversity

The new CW series “Black Lightning” is striking — literally and figuratively — as a new superhero series unlike any ever seen before on prime time television. A black superhero character isn’t playing a strange sidekick, comic foil or interchangeable background figure; he is the lead — with supernatural powers. And he’s one who loves black women, is a die-hard family man, a pillar of his community, and has relationships with merciless drug bosses. This irreverent slice of African-American authenticity is offered up in the pilot episode of “Black Lightning,”…

Knowing when to cut: How movie editing manipulates emotion – CNET

Writing this interview with Hollywood movie editor Tatiana S Riegel was hard. I spent nearly an hour on the phone with Riegel, who began her editing career on films like “JFK” and “Pulp Fiction” before working on the pilot episode of “Game of Thrones” and movies such as “The Men Who Stare at Goats”. We discussed the editing process and her latest film, “I, Tonya” — and our talk was so fascinating, I didn’t want to cut anything out of the transcript. Sadly, this article would have ended up five times…

Surfers may be swallowing bacteria and spreading it to others

Catching a wave – and something else?Description:Steve Woods Photography/Getty By Andy Coghlan Surfers seem to be gulping down antibiotic resistant superbugs in seawater, and may unwittingly be spreading them to people they know. In 2013, the US Centers for Disease Control warned that each year, 23,000 Americans die from untreatable infections, and 2 million are infected with increasingly resistant superbugs. To…
