2021 Open Championship: Turnberry to miss out on hosting during Donald Trump presidency

R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers trumpeted the Home of Golf as the ideal venue to host the showpiece 150th Open but admitted “politics” is a complicating factor in taking the event back to Trump’s course in Ayrshire any time soon. Carnoustie will stage this year’s championship in July followed by Portrush in 2019 and Royal St George’s in 2020, with an English course following St Andrews. That means Turnberry will be overlooked for longer than any other course on the Open rota having last staged it in 2009. “It would…

They said the US President will definitely be coming to London on an official trip later this year. Downing Street sources last night confirmed an official invitation for a State visit had already been accepted and was expected to happen this year, though they remained tight-lipped about when. Celtic and Rangers news: Brendan Rodgers right over Moussa Dembele, Nacho Novo very lucky

I had it in 1983 before I joined Arsenal from Celtic. I didn’t want to leave the Hoops, and at the turn of the year the gaffer Billy McNeill was trying to get me on a deal similar to other first-team players. But I was summoned to a meeting at the then owner Desmond White’s office in Glasgow and was told that it was time for me to move on and they would be selling me at the end of the season. Players didn’t have the power then that they…

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes: We have NO money to spend to catch Celtic

McInnes believes Brendan Rodgers’ side would be disappointed if they failed to make history with a second successive treble, such is the gulf between the Hoops and the rest of the pack. But that won’t stop the Dons manager trying to guide his team to their second Scottish Cup Final in a row and pushing table-topping Celtic as hard as possible between now and May. Yet contrary to the public view that the Dons – backed by property tycoon Stewart Milne and multi-millionaire major shareholder Dave Cormack – have funds…

Celtic news: Brendan Rodgers fires warning to Premiership rivals

The champions go into this weekend’s round of fixtures five points clear of Rangers and Aberdeen, with a better goal difference and a game in hand. Celtic, who hope to sign RB Leipzig defender Marvin Compper next month, will have played 38 matches by the time their home derby with Rangers is completed on December 30. Rodgers said: “You put so much into the first half of the season, but when we get to the break we’ll hit the reset button again. We’ll have more coaching and working time, so…

Man Utd: John Hartson makes incredible Rangers claim about Jose Mourinho

Last week the Aberdeen boss decided to stay put at Pittodrie instead of risking a move to a club who took six weeks to even make an approach for him. Former Celtic striker Hartson believes that was probably the best decision for all concerned given Rangers’ dismal recruiting record. Mark Warburton and Pedro Caixinha have both gone within the space of eight months this year after proving disastrous appointments. That’s why Hartson has no faith that those responsible for bringing them in will make it third time lucky.  He said:…

Pensioners less likely to suffer serious fall if they do THIS, research says

Contrary to the traditional saying “pride comes before a fall”, the opposite appears to be true, after a team of scientists analysed data form more than 11,000 people aged 60 and over. Falls affect a large proportion of older adults, sometimes leading to injury and death, and the cost of falls to the government has been estimated at £1.1bn. The well-known saying “pride comes before a fall” comes from the Old Testament as a paraphrase of, “Pride goeth before destruction”, and suggests that pride is a possible psychological predictor of…
