Manchester United will only move for Napoli star Jorginho if one target rejects transfer

Manchester United are set to sign a midfielder when the transfer window reopens with Serie A duo Jorginho and Milinkovic-Savic tipped to move to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils are determined to sign a player to help take the shackles off Paul Pogba, particularly with Nemanja Matic’s form representing cause for concern.

Napoli star Jorginho has supposedly been shortlisted to replace veteran Michael Carrick, who will retire at the end of the season and take up a position on Jose Mourinho’s coaching team.

Yet the Manchester Evening News say Manchester United will only go for Jorginho if they miss out on Milinkovic-Savic.

The Lazio star has enjoyed a stellar season over in Italy.

And that has led to talk United may try to sign the Serbia international at the end of the season.

Milinkovic-Savic could be key to getting the best out of Pogba, whose performances have dipped in recent times.

Matic’s own levels have dropped off with the former Chelsea star beginning to resemble a shadow of his former self.

The MEN say United are keen on Jorginho as well.

But Milinkovic-Savic is the one Mourinho would really love to sign.

Speaking in December, however, the 22-year-old’s manager, Simone Inzaghi, insisted he was happy at the Stadio Olympico.

“He is 22 and doing really well, so attracting interest is normal,” Inzaghi said of Milinkovic-Savic.

“I speak with him a lot, though. He is happy here.

“He is happy with Lazio, and he is aware that if teams like that are interested in him, then it will be down to Lazio [if he leaves].

“I’m happy if there is interest in our players. It proves that we’re doing well, but at the moment he’s very happy at Lazio. Last year he signed a new long-term contract with us.”
