Black Panther: BIG news for Marvel blockbuster – can it break THIS massive record?

The Marvel film’s box office estimates have been boosted to a hefty $170 million for the President’s Day weekend.

For context, that’s a long way up from the $100 million initially projected for the hugely well-reviewed release.

If it stays on target, it should break the record for the biggest President’s Day weekend of all time – breaking the $152 million record set by Deadpool in 2016.

Even if it misses that, it should at least win the second highest launch for this particular weekend, beating out Fifty Shades of Grey’s $93 million from 2015.

Disney is keeping relatively conservative with its tracking, and is estimating around $150 million.

When Black Panther opens in the US this weekend, Variety reports that it will be in more than 4,000 cinemas, including more than 400 lucrative IMAX screens.

It launches in the UK, Taiwan and Hong Kong today, with other European territories and Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia to follow tomorrow.

Internationally it is thought to open similar to Doctor Strange ($114 million), dented slightly perhaps by the fact that the featured heroes aren’t as universally well-known as other Marvel sure-things.
