Travel chaos as bush fires shuts down airport and cancels ALL flights

Residents surrounding the airport have ben told it is now too late to leave their homes as the area is engulfed in flames and smoke.

Estimates suggest the blaze has now covered 472-hectares as winds continue to force the blaze northwards.

Four ‘waterbombing’ aircraft have been called in.

The fire, originally one trail travelling east towards the airport, split in two and is now heading in separate directions.

All flights from Newcastle airport on Saturday afternoon and evening have been cancelled.

A bowling alley and aquatic centre were evacuated in Raymond Terrace, north of Tomago.

No casualties have been reported.
